new car insurance. bought a used car from honda dealer, how long can the temporary insurance cover the new car?

If you purchased the insurance on your car, you have insurance. You need to keep paying the premiums to keep the insurance. You get a temporary ID card when you sign up for the policy. This is good until the policy is issued with the permanent ID card (which is good for the policy term).
I am not sure what you mean by "temporary insurance". If you think you have insurance on the vehicle BEFORE you purchase a policy, you do NOT.
In order to have coverage extend to a vehicle, you would have had to have a policy on a prior vehicle that is still in force when you purchase another vehicle. Then, you get temporary coverage for 4-14 days (depending on the state, coverages, policy edition date, etc). You have to notify your insurance company before these days pass & you have to add the car on the day you get it to have coverage on it. The company just gives a certain amount of days to notify them of the new purchase, it doesn't mean they give free coverage, they will charge you back to the date of purchase to have coverage from the date of purchase.

every state is different - most states you have 7 days to register your vehicle so ideally the temp ins from the dealer will last 7 days but thats only if you drive around w/ there plates on your car…i dont know of many dealers that allow you to do that because it's a huge liability risk on there end

For automobile insurance the quick way to get a very good quote is do a policy comparison on auto policies. Make sure that you choose similar policies with the same limits, car make, zip code, etc so that all options are a good comparison.

What I usually recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.lowratetoday.com since they have top name insurers and will give multiple quotes on car insurance polices.

The standard auto policy, which you probably have, automatically covers the "new" car for at least 30 days from purchase, but don't put off adding it; it's easy to forget. The company will ask what date you bought the car, so tell them honestly and don't try to save a couple of weeks' coverage.
