Temporary Car Insurance?

is there an insurance company in the US that offers temp. or short term insurance? i want to buy a car, just to drive back to my house and fix up a bit (5 min drive) and i dont want to pay for a months’ worth i wont use, when im only 5 mins away.

Most insurance companies offer temporary operating permits (or TOPS as they are known in the industry). They can be for 1 day to 2 weeks. More expensive than a full term 1 year policy but if you only need it for one day don’t go through the hassle of taking out a long term policy, cancel it in a couple of days and pay a cancellation penalty (oh yes there will be one).

i own a repair shop, and you can do like i have done before, take out a policy and keep it three days and then cancel it,they send you a refund check in less than 30 days,i have done this a lot,and they know what im doing, they just don’t care ,i even keep an updated license plate around for this so i can transfer one to the car and get it in my name, that’s actually the best way i have found to do it,other than hire a wrecker to go and get it for you, they don’t care if there,s insurance on it or not they have insurance that will cover it or you, that’s the cheapest and easiest way to do this, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Ive looked for this previously, and the answer is no.
I have two registered/insured vehicles (geico), and bought a third on ebay, but i had to drive from indiana to penn to pick it up. My insurance company couldnt do anything, but my fathers insurance company (state farm) insures any car he drives.
So if he is driving in an uninsured car, and gets pulled over, even though he doesnt have insurance on the car, he wont get a ticket.
So if you currently have a car that is insured, you might want to look into this, but if you dont, ask people you know if they do.

Call your insurance company. Your agent should be able to cover you with a one-day rider. Or you can have the dealer drive it to your house, then finish signing the papers at home (that would be free AND convenient).

Signing an insurance contract with the intent to cancel it during the cool-down period is insurance fraud. While most agents and companies would not bother, you may find yourself being made the example for others….

If you live in the state of Indiana you better keep your insurance. I was in an accident less than 5min. from my home with no insurance and they suspended my license for 90 days.
