What's the best way to handle car insurance, for an American on temporary assignment in Canada?

I am an American citizen and will be working in Canada for 1-2 years. My car is registered and (currently) insured in Florida. I'm not sure if there's anything special I should do, and whether my car insurance company will take care of me, should I have an accident in Canada.

provincial jurisdiction. check with the provincial authority. but if you are staying longer than 6 months, you are considered a resident, and required to register and insure your car in the province you are residing. you can keep your regular insurance for a few months though until you get settled in and find a local insurance company.

I've found some good information here too…

carquotes.fateback.com - try this one. I have their car insurance and, as I know, they can provide such a service.

Your US insurance is good in Canada for short-term visits like vacations, but not long-term such as you describe. Check with whoever is employing you in Canada and see if they can help; this situation may have come up before. Some US insurers are also active in Canada, so you might check with yours and see if that's the case; otherwise, you'll probably need to register and insure it specifically there.

Any province you are moving to will require that you register the vehicle in that province within 30 days of the vehicle moving to that province. By not doing so you are looking are repeatable tickets for not registering the vehicle. Your Florida insurance is not valid to register a vehicle in whatever province you are moving to. They will want to see it insured by an insurer from that is licensed to do business in that province.
Your insurer in Florida will not want to keep insuring a vehicle that is going to be regularly used in another state, never mind another country. You are required to inform of the move, and once you do they will not want to stay on risk.

For automobile insurance the obvious way to get a good rate is do a rate comparison on car policies. Make sure that you choose similar policies with the same limits, car make, location, etc so that all things are an accurate comparison.

What I always recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have big name insurers and will give several prices on car insurance polices.
